CMD Splint Therapy

Craniomandibular dysfunction (CMD)

diagnostics and therapy

Do you grind your teeth at night? Do you have pain in your masticatory muscles or temporomandibular joints? These signs may mean that you have CMD (craniomandibular dysfunction), a functional disorder involving the teeth, muscles and temporomandibular joints.

This dysfunction can be compensated for over a long period of time, but at some point – often when triggered by stress – agonizing symptoms may occur that make treatment desirable.

The following symptoms can occur:

  • neck tension
  • headaches
  • back pain
  • earaches
  • sensitive teeth
  • cracking in the temporomandibular joints
  • abrasions (loss of hard tooth substances)

If you notice any such signs, please do not hesitate to contact us! Ms. Siewert, who has many years of experience in this field, will be the one taking care of your procedure. She will perform a so-called clinical functional analysis – a comprehensive examination of the structures of the masticatory organ (temporomandibular joints, tendons, muscles, teeth and ligaments). This is the only way to get information about the exact cause of your discomfort and to have a customized splint made. For some patients, a prescription for physical therapy may also be useful.

Public health insurance companies cover the costs of the splint but not the extensive diagnostics (functional analysis).

If permanently wearing a splint is too uncomfortable for you, we can also optimise the malpositioned bite through minimally invasive ceramics, composite abutments, or prosthetic measures. It will be tailored to the root of the problem found in your previous diagnosis.
